(I used my Waseda University ID card to get a discount at an American movie theater once, and they weren't particularly pleased about it either...) I don't think THAT bit was racial. The English / Japanese language-based condescending sounds suspect, though. I really hate it when people do that to me. You did the right thing by walking out and finding a more welcoming (and enjoyable) restaurant nearby. Kudos for that. I think the student bit is legitimate, actually. The natural response is "Oh this is so horrible..." replaced by "But perhaps it was necessary?" ultimately concluding in "Whatever the reason, this was a terrible chapter in human history." I wound up in an Indian restaurant in Yamaguchi city with my friend, and I recall after we took a little too long to order the chef himself came out looking none too pleased ... Nice place, though. Hiroshima’s a place that stirred up a lot of conflicting feelings in me.
