Um...scratch that - I just read Japan Probe's coverage. Didn't realize that your ID WAS issued by a Japanese University. That does indeed smack of racism. Lousy. (Sorry for the double comment.)

I think the student bit is legitimate, actually. (I used my Waseda University ID card to get a discount at an American movie theater once, and they weren't particularly pleased about it either...) I don't think THAT bit was racial.

The English / Japanese language-based condescending sounds suspect, though. I really hate it when people do that to me. You did the right thing by walking out and finding a more welcoming (and enjoyable) restaurant nearby. Kudos for that.

[...] Darlo, a British student studying at Konan University in Kobe, blogged about an Indian restaurant in Hiroshima that apparently refused to give him its advertised student discount because he was a foreigner: We flicked through the menu, as is customary despite knowing already what we were going to order, when a member of staff came over. We then (in Japanese) ordered the student deal for each of us, when he asked if we had student cards [issued by a Japanese University] which we then brandished. He then asked us to wait a moment for another staff member, at the time I thought it might have been because he wasn’t confident in using Japanese. [...]

Hiroshima's a place that stirred up a lot of conflicting feelings in me. The natural response is "Oh this is so horrible..." replaced by "But perhaps it was necessary?" ultimately concluding in "Whatever the reason, this was a terrible chapter in human history."

I wound up in an Indian restaurant in Yamaguchi city with my friend, and I recall after we took a little too long to order the chef himself came out looking none too pleased ... Nice place, though.

In this blog entry I talk about my recent trip to Hiroshima and west Honshuu, all the excellent sites I saw, but also the first time being on the receiving end of discrimination in Japan ... from an Indian restaurant!...
